Allahabad Agricultural Institute was established in 1910 under the leadership of Dr. Sam Higginbottom (a missionary of Presbyterian Church, USA). Presently the University owns and holds about 600 acres of land. In 2009, Allahabad Agricultural Institute- Deemed University was rechristened as Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHIATS) which is Christian Minority Institution under article 30 of the constitution of India in honour of the founder.

The University is striving to acquire a place in the arena of International Science and Technology while holding a pioneering status in India. The University is held in Trust as a common ecumenical heritage by the Christian Churches and Christian Organizations of the country. It seeks to be a national center of professional excellence in education and service to the people with the participation of its students and faculty members from all over India. True success in life depends not only on the ability and technical training of the individual but even more on his/ her moral character and attitude towards life.   • 100 year old University run by Christian Missionary. Pioneer Institute to offer Agricultural Engineering degree in Asia and 4th in the world.
  • Ministry of HRD – Govt. of India, approved the recommendations of the University Grant Commission declared SHIATS as Deemed University vide notification No. F.9-26/94 –U.3 dated March 15, 2000 under section 3 of UGC Act 1956.
  • The Distance Education Programme of the University has been approved by the Joint Committee of UGC-AICTE-DEC.
    ISB&M is an authorized study center of SHIATS under the Directorate of Distance Education.
  • National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited SHIATS at B++ level.
  • Recognized member of International Association of Universities, Indian Association of Agricultural Universities (IAUA) and Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • Member of International Association of Universities (IAU) Paris, France.
