Agricultural Institute was established in 1910 under the leadership of
Dr. Sam Higginbottom (a missionary of Presbyterian Church, USA).
Presently the University owns and holds about 600 acres of land. In
2009, Allahabad Agricultural Institute- Deemed University was
rechristened as Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology
and Sciences (SHIATS) which is Christian Minority Institution under
article 30 of the constitution of India in honour of the founder.
The University is striving to acquire a place in the arena of
International Science and Technology while holding a pioneering status
in India. The University is held in Trust as a common ecumenical
heritage by the Christian Churches and Christian Organizations of the
country. It seeks to be a national center of professional excellence in
education and service to the people with the participation of its
students and faculty members from all over India. True success in life
depends not only on the ability and technical training of the
individual but even more on his/ her moral character and attitude
towards life. Through teaching and other educational activities, the
Institute tries to develop integrity, moral stamina and unselfish
idealism in its students. [
